Free State
Residential Care Centre celebrates its 25th birthday (1981
- 2006)
Corporate and other support in the past helped us to
maintain this programme of residential care and protective
workshops for the past twenty-five years and we are
confident that these programmes will be maintained in this
way with the necessary funding.
Free State Residential Care Centre requests financial
assistance for its ongoing multi-racial programmes for
mentally challenged adults in the Free State Province,
Republic of South Africa, who can not function in the open
labour market and who are in need of constant care.
People with mental disabilities are most often the victim
of exploitation and deprivation as a result of negligence
and absence of any care- or support services.
Without proper care many will become prostitutes and HIV
infected. Free State Residential Care Centre aims to
provide to more than 200 mentally challenged adults the
service of a residential facility as well as the support
of protective workshops.
A selection panel screens all candidates and services are
restricted to be for disabled persons who need constant
care and who can't function independently in the society.
Our two main programmes are:
1.
Residential Care
Five housemothers look after the physical and mental
well-being of 156 mentally challenged adults. This
service also includes a daily clinic facility on the
premises as well as a laundry service. A well
equipped kitchen provides 3 meals per day. Provision
is made for daily transport to other medical services.
Recreational programmes are in place. Residents are
members of marathon clubs. The services of a
volunteer psychologist is also available. We network
with South Free State Mental Health to provide social
services to the residents when the need arises. We
manage the finances of each individual.
2. Protective Therapies
8 Therapies (bakery, woodwork, toys, contracts, textile,
pottery, silk screening and farming) give the mentally
challenged person the opportunity to be involved in an
activity that matches his/her skills and ability.
The use of a professional occupational therapist is
available. Products are sold to the public.
The Centre actively participates in about 40 exhibitions
in Bloemfontein and rural areas per annum. The
Centre uses radio, newspapers, flyers and open days to
market the centre and its products. Occupies 156
residents and 48-day workers per day. We also do
contract work for various businesses in Bloemfontein.
Daily transport is provided to 48-day workers to and from
the Centre. One main meal per day is supplied to day
workers.
The therapies
are economy driven and great care is taken in the
management of raw materials, the production of a good
quality product and the marketing of the Centre and its
services.
Free State Residential Care Centre was wounded in 1981 to
address the plight of adult mentally challenged persons.
The Centre is a non-profit organisation. It has a
proud history of excellent services delivery to all
population groups. A long waiting list and a very
low turnover is proof that the service is in demand and
very necessary.
The Centre is a registered NPO and also article 18A
registered at SARS.
The provision of residential care and protective
workshops facilities is a long-term commitment because
this programme is directed towards persons above the age
of 18 years and continues for the rest of their lives.
The service started as far back as 1981 and have for the
past twenty-five years grown from strength to strength.
This proves that the Centre has the support of the
community, because it delivers such an important and
invaluable services.
The programmes also address many additional pressing
issues such as:
•
Community Services
•
Job Creation
•
Training
•
Empowerment of Disabled
•
Financial Management of each resident on an individual
basis
•
Health Care
•
Nutrition / Feeding
•
Transport
•
Sport Development
Involvement and support in these programmes will help us
to sustain and even expand the services to the most
destitute, the mentally challenged person.
